We had a wonderful time over our six days in Yellowstone. We arrived on Saturday into Jackson Hole, and drove through the Grand Teton's to the Old Faithful Inn. The rain was lightly falling as we checked out the thermal features on Geyser Hill around Old Faithful. Sunday and Monday were rainy and cold; I wore two pairs of pants, five shirts, and a rain coat. On Sunday we drove around the lower loop of the Park, seeing the West Thumb Geyser Basin, the Mud Volcano, and the geyser basis at Norris. We defrosted and had lunch at the (Yellowstone) Lake Hotel. We rode the Yellow Sightseeing Bus on Monday morning, with only our guide, Betty. The other two couples who were supposed to be on the tour cancelled because of the bad weather. The bus tour focused on photography, and the cloudy, rainy weather was not going to let them take good pictures. We took pictures of a creek, a geyser, falls, and wildlife [see the pictures of the Firehole, the bison calf and the trumpeter swan]. On Monday afternoon, I took a ranger guided tour of the Black Sand Basin and then checked the Old Faithful visitor center bulletin board for predictions of geyser eruptions. It was 2:30 PM and the Daisy Geyser was predicted to erupt at 3:15 PM, plus or minus 1/2 hour, with a half hour walk. I walked as fast as I could to get there to meet the window. When I got there, the wipe board had been revised to an hour later. Bob joined me as I waited for Daisy, which then erupted exactly as predicted. We then went over to Riverside, which erupted before its window, and we nearly missed it as we thought we could squeeze in a visit to Morning Glory pool. These geysers were all at the end of the main path, so we started walking back towards the Inn and Old Faithful. We sat down at Grand Geyser watching a marmot, and the geyser just happened to go off. That was pure luck, because that geyser can only be predicted within a four hour window, and we just happened to be there when it went off. There are pictures of all three geyser eruptions, and the Morning Glory pool in the link.

Tuesday marked the second half of our trip, when we switched from the Old Faithful Inn to Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. We drove around to the "Grand Canyon of Yellowstone" and saw the sights of the South and North Rims. We have many pictures from places like "Grand View," "Artist's Point," Inspiration Point," "The Brink of the Lower Falls," and the "Brink of the Upper Falls." It was nearly 3 PM by the time we had lunch, and then starting driving up towards Mammoth. The whole wildlife watching experience is bizarre: people stake out for hours, with binoculars and long lens cameras, waiting for pictures. At an elk carcass we saw two wolves and a coyote. While at the elk, the park ranger who was there on traffic control told us that he had seen a bear earlier at the Petrified Tree. With all of the stops, it was 9:30 PM by the time we reached Mammoth. Wednesday was wildlife watching from 8 AM to 8 PM. We started going south from Mammoth towards Swan Lake, where there had been reports of a grizzly bear with four cubs. We made a small detour to take a ranger tour of the upper part of the Mammoth Hot Springs terrace. Then we stopped at the long line of parked cars - if there were a bear, we didn't see it. The next group of parked cars was more productive. We stood at the top of valley, in the two feet between the guard rail and the drop-off, and watched the bear with the four cubs. Four cubs is apparently very rare, according to the bear expert (no kidding - he had a book in the bookstore) that we were talking with and looking through his scope. The cubs were climbing up trees, playing in the water, and being in general cute. They finally moved out of view, and we started driving east towards, and past Tower. We spent a long time at Slough Creek, where I was bored out of my mind, but Bob was having a good time. There were bears up on the hill, really far away, and the groupies were parked out there just waiting for the bears to come down. Eventually we headed west, where we luckily saw a moose. After the wildfires in 1989, many of the moose [see picture] moved south towards the Grand Tetons, so there are not very many left in the park. On the way back I only let Bob stop when there were seven cars or more, and even with that rule we did not have dinner until 8:30 PM.

Thursday was the last day of our trip, and we went hiking from the Yellowstone Picnic Area trail. On the drive to the trail we got the best picture of a black bear, and while on the trail we took pictures of five mountain goats. After our lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, we saw a bighorn sheep that was resting right across from the picnic area. We headed back towards Mammoth, and spent the rest of the day there, checking out the hot spring terraces. Many people are disappointed with the terraces, because the main terrace has been dry since the late 1950's, and has lost its color. However, this is a natural thing to happen, and there are new areas that are now active.
Friday was a long day of travel, but it was all worth it because we got to see our son Ryan. Ryan had spent the week at Camp Grandma and Grandpa. Part of the time the twins were there too, causing mayhem. The best story my mom told was that the kids were upstairs playing, and the home phone kept ringing and stopping. My mom finally picked up the phone, only to have to apologize to the police because the kids kept speed dialing 911, and saying "bye" and hanging up. Many thanks to my wonderful parents for taking care of Ryan.

So much has been going on. First, if you click on the link, you will see pictures of Bob's retirement party. Then you will see pictures of Ryan having fun at the beach. He was soaking wet, but having a great time anyway in the cold breeze. The big news is that Ryan is potty training. It is going better than I expected, which means that most of the time he is peeing on the potty, most of the time he is pooping in his pants, and a lot of the time we are cleaning up.

I posted on Feb 9 that Ryan had pooped in the toilet. It is now April 12, and I proudly report that he has now pooped twice in the toilet.

Here is an album of two events recently. First, we had a massive tree taken down in the backyard. Bob and Ryan were in heaven watching the huge crane lift the dead tree over the house. Second, Bob turned 57, and to celebrate we hiked a 7 mile trail that is part of the Appalachian Trail. There are two lookouts - the Pulpit Rock, and the Pinnacle.

While getting his haircut, we eventually watched Barney, the big purple dinosaur. Ryan says mommy and daddy, but he refuses to say his name or any other name. Barney came on, and he yelled "BARNEY!"

There was one other word milestone over the weekend. I peeled a banana for him, and he said "thank you."

Ryan and the terrible twos

Ryan is one month away from two years old, and the terrible twos are already here. Yesterday he cried for minutes when I ate the last of the onion rings ("mine!"). Today he was laying on the kitchen floor whining. I have no idea what he wanted because his vocabulary is small, and there are no sentences yet.

Virginia Beach 2009

As we do every year, we had a great time this year down the beach. All of the kids had a blast playing in the ocean, and none of them showed any fear. As for funny stories... a BMW got stuck in the sand; dinner out with the whole family involved bread and butter throwing; kids playing in the toilet (gross, but also funny).

We enjoyed a very patriotic day. In the morning we went to the Newtown Square parade, full of music, classic cars, and fire engines, and candy! Here you can see Daddy and Ryan waving to the parade. At night we went over to Aston and watched the fireworks. They were a hit, with Ryan saying "wow" over and over again. Thanks to all of the past and present servicemen and women for making it all possible.

Please Touch Museum

Last night we celebrated the 30th birthday of Sean's girlfriend Rebecca. The party was a hit with Ryan. He got to play the drums, and swing at a pinata. Here is a video of him jamming on the drums with his sister Aileen. Aileen calls Ryan her "brother from another mother."

Thank God for Mothers, especially mine this week. Ryan had the dreaded fever this Tuesday, and Bob stayed home with him. Wednesday and Thursday my mom watched him, as his fever spiked to 103+. He was pitiful, saying "no" over and over.

All I wanted for Mother's Day was an ice cream cake, and Bob bought me one that said "I Love My Mommy." Ryan was all smiles, as you can see from the picture.

Easter in Chicago

Ryan and I visited the twins in Chicago this weekend. We went for walks, took the kids to the park, and saw the Easter Bunny. As you can tell from the picture, the Easter Bunny was not a hit. However, there were pet bunnies in the shop, which Ryan loved (and called "dogs" - every animal is a dog). The bunnies scared the twins when they nibbled at their little fingers. We went to the Easter Egg Hunt in Wilder Park, but the kids had no idea that they were supposed to pick up the eggs and candy that were strewn in the lawn.

Puerto Rico Trip

Bob, Ryan, and I just returned from Spring Break in Puerto Rico. As you can see from the updated slideshow, we were not alone: we vacationed with my sister Connie, her twins Nathan and Gavin, her husband Mark, and my parents. And a good time was had by all. Everyone was well and there were no trips to the emergency room.

With the children napping a good portion of the day, we did not venture far from the town house very often. However, we did visit the Rio de Camuy Caverns and the Arecibo Observatory (everyone together); and my parents and my family visited El Morro on Old San Juan. The rest of the time was spent by the pool.

There were of course some funny happenings... I got Bob and myself lost on our way to the town house. We were going south when we were supposed to be going north. Connie and I were watching the kids by ourselves and not everything in the house survived. Bob went to take a shower, and a hour later all he had done was play poker on the IPod and eat an ice cream cone. Grandpa Ernie and Ryan watched copious quantities of the Backyardigans. We found a good bakery, and celebrated the twins' 1st birthday 3 times.

Ryan loved the twins so much that he followed them upstairs when it was their bedtime. They got along pretty well, with Ryan only taking away their toys a few times. Ryan wasn't jealous of me holding the twins like he was at Christmas. My dad was holding out hope that the twins would walk by their first birthday, just like Connie and I did, but it wasn't so. When I held them up to stand, they didn't put their legs down to bear weight. One day soon they will decide to walk, and then Connie and Mark will really be in trouble.

Ryan only has a few words, but "dog" and "woof woof" are two of them. We went to Costco today and they had a touch and feel book on dogs, that we had to buy. Ryan said "dog" about 100 times in the store. The picture is featured to the right of this page.

Happy Valentine's Day

It has been a while since my last post, for various reasons. Just like last year, January was filled with illness: strep throat for me, colds for everyone. We also lost our camera, so I have no pictures to share. Today I purchased a brand new camera so I will have new pictures soon. We lost things before Ryan was born (my sunglasses, baseball tickets, Bob's jacket), but now we are losing things at an exponential rate.

Compared with recent years with no snow to speak of, January was pretty snowy. We do not own a sled, so Bob improvised with a laundry basket. Ryan enjoyed sledding down the hill in it. At the end of the video you can hear me say "bubbles." That is one of the words Ryan can say now. He also can say "juice" "shoes" "dog" and "book." I have tried to get the words on camera, but I have only been successful in taking film of me saying those words. Ryan and I just watched some of those videos together, and he of course repeated the words as I said them - too bad we were not on video.

Happy Holidays

The new album that I just added to my photo gallery chronicles the busy holiday season that we just had. The weekend after Thanksgiving, while Bob's daughter Cara was still home, we went to the Philadelphia Zoo. Then I basically fast forward to Christmas Eve, when Bob's children and father came over for dinner. Aileen is a hair dresser so she spiked Ryan's hair up.

Late on Christmas Eve we drove to my parents house in Toms River, NJ. My sister Connie and her husband Mark were already there with their 9 month old twin boys. You can tell them apart because Nathan has a small freckle on one of his wrists; otherwise, Connie and Mark try to dress Gavin in green. The twins talk way more than Ryan (at 15 months) does. Gavin is especially talkative, and says "Gunta Gunta Gunta; Goya Goya Goya." We all called them the "Guntas."

The day after Christmas we drove up to see my paternal Grandfather in Dunellen, NJ. He is doing great for 88 years old (Happy Birthday Grandpa - a New Year's Baby). That same day, my maternal Grandmother went into the hospital with symptoms that were later identified as being caused by restrictions in her carotid arteries. She underwent surgery yesterday on one side and is doing well.

Ryan was very jealous when I held one of the twins. He tried to push the twin off my lap. He also regressed in his eating habits - he let my father feed him baby food. I tried to feed him baby food and he wanted no part of it.

My parents had Tivo'ed three episodes of the "Backyardigans" at my request. "Stomp, Stomp, Stomp, I'm doing the Yeti Stomp." "Make the world nice, fill it up with ice." "Ski Patrol to the Rescue." Let's just say that we watched the episodes so many times that I will never forget the songs. Ryan would walk over to the chairs in front of the TV, grab the Tivo remote, and wait for someone to put on the show. If he was in a really good mood, we would twirl in circles to the opening song.

By the way, the car was fine. Bob drove it down the hill, and there was no damage except to the bush that I ran over.

Slid the Car off the Driveway

It is really icy here in Pennsylvania, which I knew before trying to leave for the train. I came inside from putting things in the car, and told Bob that I just might slide off the driveway. And I did! The tow truck will come soon, and I hope the car is ok.

Ryan was opening and closing the doors to the fireplace, and Bob told me to get him to stop, because he might cut himself. I told Bob that Ryan was ok, and I went back to reading the paper. Then Bob told me to look at the fireplace - and Ryan was in it!

Halloween in Chicago

Ryan and I are out in Chicago visiting Aunt Connie, Uncle Mark, Nathan and Gavin. Connie and I took the dogs and kids trick-or-treating to 3 houses, and after that the twins were asleep, and Connie and I had had enough. Ryan ate some M&M's and you can see the chocolate residue on his face.

Bob and Sean just returned from their 10 day trip to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. While we are still going through all of the pictures, here is a preview of the album that I will publish in a few days. Ryan and I went to visit Grandma and Grandpa Sadowski in Toms River, NJ. We went to Ortley Beach both days, and the slideshow currently features a few pictures we took at the beach.

If you click on the link at the bottom left of the page "Link to more albums," I have added a folder called "Bob and Tracy as Kids." I am sure that Ryan is my son, but also sure that he does not look like either one of us. I have looked through albums, and found a few pictures of me and Connie that sort of look like Ryan. There is also a picture of Sean that may look like Ryan in 1/2 year, and one of Bob when he is around 2 years old.

All of the kids like the beach. Ryan doesn't mind the sand at all, even if it is all over his face.

End of June Update

Ryan continues to motor around, causing trouble. No, Bob says he causes havoc. The first picture in the slideshow is the remnants of our potted plant. Even though the plant is now dead, I am leaving it there so that Ryan leaves the other plants alone.

On Father's Day weekend we celebrated Reagan Lesser's first birthday (Tracy's 1st Cousin Chris Lesser's daughter). Also in attendance was Tracy's other cousin Jennifer, and her three children. There is a particularly amusing picture sequence where Reagan gets annoyed with Reese about sharing a toy.

And then we have more pictures of Ryan having a blast in the pool. He had a lot of supervision: Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa Sadowski, and Alyssa and Jenna Talley.

Ryan is finally a big boy. Not only does he have 2 teeth on the bottom and 1 on the top, but he just got his first haircut. Aileen did such a fantastic job that not one tear was shed.

Otherwise Ryan is busy motoring around the house, getting into everything that he shouldn't be getting into.

May Update

I finally uploaded all of our pictures from May. We had such a busy month, and Ryan went through so many changes. On May 10th, my cousin Kelly married Matt in Washington, DC. Among the other festivities, we visited the Washington Monument, the Natural History Museum, and the WWII Memorial. At that time, Ryan was only good a rolling around. Now he can crawl around and pull himself up on the furniture.

We are in Chicago visiting Ryan's new cousins. He likes to crawl over them and play with their bouncy seats. As for the dogs, they are hit and miss. Stanley likes Ryan, but Larry is not so sure.

Ryan is 7 1/2 months old now, and is just starting to crawl. And it is so frustrating! Take a look at this video shot on Thursday:

7 Month Update

Ryan is 7 months old tomorrow, and weighs over 21 pounds - that's over 90% in height and weight on the growth chart. I started buying all 18 month sizes for the summer because I don't want to have to buy new clothes in August when he grows out of the 12 month size. He can slither backwards, but does not get his butt in the air or do the "bucking bronco." It does not look like he is going to crawl forward any time soon. There is drool all of the time but no sign of teeth.

Yesterday we walked in the United Cerebal Palsy charity walk/run. Ryan had a fantastic time looking around at all of the people and things. Most of the time he is more interested in things than paying attention to mom and dad. Tomorrow we are walking in the March of Dimes Walk in my favorite spot, Ridley Creek State Park.
